China Arts and Technology Research Institute (中国艺术科技研究所), commonly abbreviated as 艺科所, is a research institution operating under China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism (文化和旅游部). Its Digital Arts Department has been active in applied research at the intersection of emerging technology and traditional Chinese culture since at least 2015, when it began exploring the integration of VR and AR with intangible cultural heritage. In the domain of digital humans specifically, the institute developed a simulation performance system for traditional Chinese opera adapted to real performers, a VR-assisted applied research project completed in 2022, which features virtual digital performers of traditional opera forms and provides audiences and enthusiasts with an interactive means of learning and experiencing opera movements in real time. A further project, presented at an institutional launch ceremony, addressed the design of immersive interactive performance systems using the intangible heritage work "Jianshu" as its performance content, integrating VR, MR, and digital human technology to render artistic scenes through interactive narrative and to promote the deep fusion of cultural tourism with advanced technology. The institute's work positions it as one of the few state-affiliated research bodies in China explicitly applying digital human technology to the preservation and interactive presentation of traditional performing arts.
